Press Release – August 21, 2012

Larry Robertson appointed by School Board to serve as at-large member

School board member Larry RobertsonThe Coweta County School Board appointed east Coweta resident Larry Robertson to serve as an at-large member of the Coweta County school board on Tuesday.

Roberston was appointed by the board to complete the unexpired term of member April Parker, who resigned from the Board earlier this summer. The school board took the action at a called meeting on August 21, after reviewing a number of applicants for the open position.

Robertson will fulfill a term lasting through December, 2014.  The seat is one of seven on the Coweta County Board of Education, and represents all of Coweta County.

It is the responsibility of the Coweta County Board of Education to appoint a successor to any board seat vacated before the completion of the term. A candidate must be a resident of the county and eligible for service according to applicable Georgia state laws.

The Board began its process of appointing a new member to the open at-large seat in August.  11 candidates submitted their names for the seat, including Robertson.  Board members reviewed the applications submitted by each of the candidates before meeting in called session on Tuesday.

“We really couldn’t lose, because there were so many good candidates,” said Board Member Frank Farmer, who is the board’s other at-large representative and who also nominated Robertson.  Farmer said that he believes the board’s newest member “will bring a lot of knowledge about our schools and our community to the board” and will balance the board’s representation well since he is from the East Coweta area and works closely as a volunteer with East Coweta High School and other area schools.

Robertson is a life-long resident of Coweta County, and a 1974 graduate of East Coweta High School.  He is a graduate of West Georgia College, where he earned a Bachelors of Business Administration in Management.

Robertson is married to Janet Robertson, who is also a graduate of East Coweta High School.  The couple has two daughters - Natalie, who is attending the University of Georgia as an advertising major, and Melanie, who is an incoming freshman at the University of West Georgia.  Both daughters are honors graduates of East Coweta High as well.

Robertson has worked at Winpak Films, of Senoia, since 1990.  He is currently the company’s Occupational Safety and Health Manager, responsible for environmental regulations compliance, health and safety systems and training.

At their vote on Tuesday, board members cited Robertson’s strong community volunteerism as a positive factor in their decision, as well as his willingness to run for an open seat on the school board in 2011.  Robertson has a long history of working with his church, youth and adult church league softball teams, Senoia area little league girls softball, youth football (as a coach), and as a public address announcer for East Coweta High School’s football and basketball programs (from 1996 to present), as well as east Coweta Middle School, Lee Middle School and the Coweta County Middle School Athletic League.

“Larry is a volunteer at heart, and I believe he will be an excellent board member,” said member Amy Dees, who represents Coweta’s school board District 1.  “I think the board will be very well-rounded with his appointment.”

“He will be an outstanding board member in my opinion,” said member Harry Mullins, who represents Coweta school board District 3. “He cares about this community and about the students in our community, and those are two very important attributes to being a successful school board member.”
